Over time, the Employee’s Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made available its services online. Universal Account Number (UAN) is key element to all the online processes of EPFO. UAN enables the subscriber to access PF account services online like withdrawal, check EPF balance and many other online facilities.
What is Universal Account Number (UAN)?
UAN is a 12-digit Universal Account Number, provided by the employer at time of joining else it is available on salary slip. UAN of an employee remains the same throughout the job, irrespective of the number of employers that the employee changes.
When you switch the employer, you just need to share your Universal Account Number (UAN) with the new employer for getting your previous balance transferred to the new account. Although UAN number remain same, but EPFO allot you a new member ID or an EPF account for every employer, which is employer-specific.

How to Generate UAN Number Online
You can generate your UAN number in following easy steps –
Step 1 – Visit EPFO’s Unified Member Portal – Click here
Step 2 – Choose the Option – “Know Your UAN Status” under the “Important Links” Section.
Step 3 – On next screen, Enter your “Mobile Number” and verify it through “OTP” received on mobile number.
Step 4 – You will be redirected to a new page, where you need to enter the following details –
- Name
- DOB
- Select from – Aadhaar, PAN, Member ID – whatever is available to you.
Once you fill in the form, you will receive an authorization PIN on registered mobile number.
Step 5 – Enter the Authorization PIN, your UAN number will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.
How to Activate your UAN
To access online services related to provident fund (PF), you need to activate your UAN number first. Here is step-by-step guide to activate your UAN –
Step 1 – Visit EPFO’s Unified Member Portal – Click here
Step 2 – Click on “Activate Your UAN” under the “Important Links” section.
Step 3 – Fill in the details in online form on next screen and click on “Get Authorization Pin”.
Step 4 – You will receive a 4-digit authorization PIN on your registered mobile number. Enter it and activate your UAN.
Once your Universal Account Number (UAN) is activated, you will receive a password on your registered mobile number to access your online PF account.
